ELECTIONS
June 2009 European elections
The Green Party vote increased by 50% across the UK in this year's European elections compared to 2004, and we came very close to winning seats in the Yorkshire and Humber, Eastern and North West regions. Our two MEPs, Caroline Lucas and Jean Lambert, retained their seats in the South-East and London regions.
Dr Kevin Warnes, one of our three Green councillors in Shipley and a candidate on the Yorkshire and Humber Greens European list this year, attended the counts in Bradford and Leeds. He says that "the results show that increasing numbers of voters recognise that the main parties do not have the answers to climate change, peak oil, and the other pressing environmental challenges that we all face. We will do even better in 2014, and the enlarged group of fifty Green MEPs in the new European Parliament will work hard over the next five years to make Europe a greener, more sustainable place in which to live." |
