Greens hold Shipley again The Green Party has won again in Shipley, the Bradford Metropolitan District Council ward that has been held by the Greens since 2000. Cllr Kevin Warnes, first elected in 2004, was re-elected on 5th May with a very solid majority. Kevin says, "I am very grateful to the 2,200 plus people who voted for the Green Party and the many local members and activists who helped to make our win possible. It was a very positive campaign in which we talked about our achievements and what we want to do for Shipley in the future. I am very pleased to be able to represent all the people of Shipley on Bradford Council for another four years. Click here to see the Shipley result Please vote to KEEP SHIPLEY GREEN on 5th May
Kevin and his Green colleagues, Martin Love and Hawarun Hussain, are a dedicated, hard-working team of ward councillors. They are honest, trusted community representatives with twenty three years of experience serving Shipley between them. Together, they make sure that the voices of local people in Shipley are properly listened to when decisions are being made. Kevin says, "I believe that Shipley needs good, accountable Green councillors who keep in touch with local residents and community groups all year round. So please vote Green if you want councillors who live in your ward and know what is going on in your neighbourhood. We have also shown that we have the best answers to the challenges we face here in Shipley and across Bradford District as a whole. Martin, Hawarun and I thank you for your support for the Greens since David Ford was first elected here as a Green councillor eleven years ago. We hope that you will help us continue our positive work on behalf of local residents in the future." Shipley: Green since 2000
Bob Swindells, award-winning author and peace activist (pictured right) won an unprecedented 11% share of the vote in the recent Worth Valley By-Election. This is the vacant Council seat formerly held by Kris Hopkins, and the voting took place on Thursday 25th November. The
Green Party finished ahead of the Liberal Democrats, with a share of 11.2% of the vote
that is up from the 7.5% achieved in 2008. Bob says that he is "delighted with the
result", which he felt reflects his view that the Green Party "is the best party
for local government and the party that will do the most to change the thoughtless way we
abuse our planet". Click here to read our Worth Valley election leaflet
Shipley Green councillors Kevin Warnes and Hawarun Hussain want radical changes in the way Bradford Council supports local food growers. According to Hawarun, "we want to boost local food growing and food networks and support community food groups". The aim is to create jobs, improve spare land and allotments like those in Saltaire (pictured right) and help sustain our local community. This will be good for Shipley and good for Bradford. The
two councillors chaired a food summit at City Hall in October that brought
together food growers, environmental organisations and Council officers to pool their
experiences of local food growing and networking. Cllr Kevin Warnes says that it was
a brilliant day and very inspiring. It was great to share ideas about how we can
make a real difference to the way food is grown across the district and in Shipley and
make the best use of the Councils limited resources at the present time. Some
of the ideas under consideration include: more community involvement in managing
allotments such as those in Northcliffe Park, Saltaire and the Red Beck area; more help
for new allotment holders with tool-sharing, knowledge and skills; more help for residents
to set up small community farms; better use of spare public land for food growing; more
fruit trees in our residential neighbourhoods, parks and woodland and more food-growing in
our schools such as expanding the pioneering garden projects already underway at
Glenaire Primary and Saltaire Primary. Hawarun
and Kevin will work with colleagues to develop these ideas over the winter and spring via
their membership of two key Council committees (Regeneration and Economy, and
Environment). Their aim is to produce a food strategy to trigger real change in the way
the Council supports local food growers. So, if YOU have ideas about how the
Council could do more to promote local food growing and networking, please let them know
(see back page for contact details). 30 October 2010 Congratulations to Cllr Hawarun Hussain, re-elected as a Shipley Ward Councillor! Hawarun was re-elected with the highest Green vote in twenty years of campaigning in Shipley. This is the tenth year in succession that the Green Party was held the Shipley ward. Two of Shipley's Green Councillors have launched their 2010 election campaigns. Cllr Hawarun Hussain is seeking re-election as one of Shipley's three District Councillors. She has represented Shipley since 2004. She says that she is "proud to be a voice for residents on Bradford Council" and is "keen to build on the achievements of Shipley's Green councillors". The Greens have won every local election here for the past ten years. Cllr Kevin Warnes is the Green Party candidate for Shipley in this year's parliamentary election. Like Hawarun, he has worked hard for Shipley as a District Councillor since 2004. He says that "public service is a privilege that should be earned" and that "local people need a stronger voice at Westminster". Green councillors Hawarun Hussain and Kevin Warnes joined residents at the Hirst Wood Bakery on Saturday 6th March to view the Council's proposals for a new traffic junction at Saltaire roundabout (see picture on right). The Council consultation was part of the Hirst Wood Day of Action. Hawarun and Kevin had spent an hour picking up litter with other community activists; they then helped Council officers explain the draft plans to dozens of residents and gather in as much local feedback as possible. Cllr Hawarun Hussain says, "the consultation was a huge success. We got lots of comments, many of them positive, and these will help the Council's highways team review the proposals". Cllr Kevin Warnes was part of the design group of officers, residents and transport consultants who spent twenty hours in winter meetings analysing a range of possible options. He says that "the plans are promising, but we still have some way to go. The most important thing is that we involve local people in this consultation before any proposals go before the Council's Executive Committee - they, in the end, will make the final decision. The proposals have some good features, but are not perfect, and it is vital that the views of local residents are properly considered. This is what we fought for as ward councillors last year, and have now delivered". 6 March 2010
This year's Bradford Council budget will be the greenest in the city's history, thanks to the cross-party deal brokered by the Green Group. The Green councillors have secured nearly £3 million for the Council's new Environment Unit to drive down the Council's energy bills and carbon footprint in 2010. Cllr Martin Love, who negotiated the agreement, says that the budget "puts Bradford in pole position to show the country what can be done to protect public services, save energy and cut carbon. And we have kept this year's increase well below inflation". 26 February 2010 Shipley's Green Councillors push Bradford Council to set ambitious energy and carbon targets for 2020 The Green Group won all-party support for its energy and carbon
motion at the January full council. The Green motion was seconded by the Conservatives,
and supported by Labour and the Liberal Democrats. Cllr Kevin Warnes, who proposed the Green motion, describes the decision as "a decisive moment in Bradford's history that will put this Council at the forefront of the fight against rising energy prices and climate change. We can now put our house in order". The new policy commits Bradford Council to reducing its energy consumption by 20% by 2020 and to find another 20% of its energy requirements from renewable sources. The Council is also committed to cutting its carbon dioxide emissions by 40% by 2020 and to working to achieve the same magnitude of district-wide carbon cuts by that date. 26 January 2010 Please click here for earlier news and campaign information Click below to read our Winter 2009-2010 Shipley Newsletter |
